slow cooker pea soup

How do you make slow cooker split pea soup? You combine onions, carrots, peas, chopped ham, and seasoning with chicken broth. Then you cook on low heat for 5 to 6 hours until done.

Consider adding a fresh loaf of bread and a side salad to complete this dinner idea. My children love to dip their pieces of bread into the soup. So, I usually opt for something thick like a sourdough.

Whenever I have leftover ham – like when I make this Slow Cooker Ham With A Peach Ginger Glaze – this is the recipe I make next! What a simple way to change up my protein’s flavor.

Tips For Making This Split Pea Soup

  • I’ve been eating pea soup for almost 40 years and can tell you that when you heat up leftovers, they tend to get very thick. If this happens, just add more chicken broth or water to thin it out. Problem solved!
  • If you don’t have a fresh loaf of bread on hand, you could always opt to serve a few crackers with each bowl. A little crunch goes a long way.
  • If you don’t have any ham, you could use bacon instead.

Can I Make This Dish Vegan Or Vegetarian?

You could absolutely convert this recipe into a vegetarian or vegan option. If you don’t want to use ham in this recipe, feel free to omit. It might change the texture and taste profile a tad, but the recipe still works. You will also need to swap out the chicken broth for vegetable broth.
