Want To Make It Special?
There are a few things you can do to add a bit more flavor and variety to this soup.
- Sweet Onions – If you’d like to add some sweetness to your meal, consider chopping up an additional sweet onion and adding it to the recipe. Or you can substitute out the yellow onions entirely. That’s up to you.
- Garlic – Different camps either like garlic in french onion soup or don’t. It does change the flavor profile completely. If you’d like to try this variation, be sure to sautee some while you are caramelizing your onions.
- Shredded Parmesan – Cheese, cheese, and more cheese! How about sprinkling some parmesan cheese onto your bread before crisping it up to add some more dimension to that crunch? Yum!
- Bay Leaf – Again, there are people who like to add a bay leaf to their onion soup recipe. I always have some on hand. So, it isn’t hard for me to throw one in when I am in the mood. But I typically made my soup without.
- Use croutons – Don’t have any bread on hand? No problem! Toss in some croutons instead.
- Go Vegan – You could always substitute out the butter and cheese with vegan options and make this a vegan dish.
- Go Gluten-Free – If you have gluten-free bread, this is a very simple dish to make gluten-free.
