Every Christmas, my mother and I would make snowball cookies together. I loved it because I got to play with powdered sugar and my mother loved it because the snowball cookies recipe ingredients list was so simple.
Now that I have a little baker of my own, it brings me so much joy to show her how to make snowball cookies and continue on with this holiday tradition.

As you can see, you do not have to be a professional baker to create these Christmas cookies. They are as simple as can be! This is also a great recipe to introduce your children to if you want to get them to start helping out more in the kitchen. My little ones love anything that involves powder sugar.
Snowball Cookies Recipe Ingredients
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 2 cups finely chopped walnuts or pecans
- 1/2 cup sugar
- 1 cup Butter (room temp)
- 1 tsp vanilla
- Box of powdered sugar (to decorate)
- Red/Green crystals (optional)
Cooking Instructions
Heat oven to 325°F
Cream 1/2 cup sugar and butter in a large bowl. Add your flour and vanilla and then beat at low speed. Make sure you continue to scrape the bowl occasionally, until well mixed.
Stir in your walnuts. Toss as needed. Shape dough into 1-inch balls. Place 1 inch apart onto ungreased cookie sheets.
Bake 10-15 minutes or until very lightly browned (don’t over bake). Cool 5-10 minutes; roll in powdered sugar while still warm and again when cool.
This last part is completely optional. We usually do NOT use sprinkles, but if you want, you can. Sprinkle with colored crystals.
Here’s a photo of me as a kid in the 80s making these cookies. A true family tradition. This recipe came from my mother’s website. Give Groovin Moms a visit!
