Cracker Barrel Hash Brown Casserole Recipe
There is this tiny little rumor that Cracker Barrel is opening up on Long Island which is my neck of the woods. I have literally written to them and BEGGED them to open up in New York because the closest restaurant is in Connecticut. I don’t mind the drive.
In fact, I usually end up hitting Cracker Barrel about once every other month if I am being honest with you. But wouldn’t it be amazing to have one just up the road?
They would make a KILLING on Long Island. We are a tiny island filled with millions of hungry, hungry hipppos. And I mean that in the most affectionate kind of way.
Anyway, let’s get back to my Copycat Cracker Barrel Hash Brown Casserole recipe. I hope you enjoy it. I hope it meets your expectations. I hope you are hungry because it will be coming out hot and ready to serve.
Ingredients
- ½ Cup Butter
- ¼ Cup Flour
- 1 Can Chicken Broth
- 1 Cup Milk
- 26 oz. Frozen Hash Browns
- 1 Onion, diced
- 8 oz. Colby Jack Cheese, shredded
- ½ teas. Pepper

Cracker Barrel Hash Brown Casserole Instructions
Preheat oven to 350˚. In a small saucepan over medium-low heat melt ¼ cup of butter and then whisk in the flour. Cook for 2 minutes while repeatedly whisking.
Turn up the heat to about a medium high flame and then slowly whisk in the chicken broth. Slowly whisk in the milk and bring to a simmer. Cook until thickened. Add the remaining ¼ cup of butter and stir until melted. Remove from heat.
In a large bowl, combine the hash browns, onion, cheese, and pepper. Pour the milk mixture over the hash browns and toss to coat.
Pour the mixture into a lightly greased 13×9 inch baking dish and bake at 350˚ until bubbly and browned, 40-50 minutes. Serve hot.
What To Serve With This Recipe?
I have a few recipes that I think would work great with this recipe. But honestly, HANDS DOWN, my fried chicken recipe is the one that takes the cake! And if you want to be a traditionalist, you could also pair this casserole with a sweet potato casserole.
What? Am I the only one that goes to Cracker Barrel and orders all the carbs on the menu? I’m not going to lie to you. That’s what I do when I am there.
I would also probably add my homemade applesauce to this mix because that’s also a HUGE thing I get when I visit. LOL. I just pretty much summed up my favorite dish for you.

There are so many reasons why I love this recipe. It’s cheesy and gooey. Everyone in my family absolutely loves to eat it.
