Chicken lemon orzo soup is one of my favorite dishes to make for my family. If someone is feeling sick, I grab some fresh lemon juice and get to work. They mean it when they say chicken soup is good for the soul.
Chicken Lemon Orzo Soup Recipe

This lemon chicken orzo soup recipe has many ingredients, but it doesn’t take much effort to make this. I promise! If you want to start a rotisserie chicken to save some time, get one. I do this often. No one can tell whether or not you made the chicken from scratch. It’s more about the fresh herbs, lemony broth, and fresh flavor profile.

Ingredients:
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
- 1 cup diced carrots
- 1 cup diced celery
- 1/2 cup diced onion
- 2 tablespoons minced garlic
- 4 cups (one, 32 oz box) chicken stock
- 1 cup water
- 1 teaspoon Italian seasoning
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/4 teaspoon ground black pepper
- 1 cup chicken, cooked and chopped
- 1-1/2 cups orzo pasta
- 1 egg
- 2 fresh lemons
- chopped fresh parsley & dill, optional for serving
Directions:
Add oil to a stock pot or dutch oven and heat over medium-high heat until hot. Stir in carrots, celery, onion, and garlic and continue to cook until onion is translucent – about 5 minutes. Stir in chicken stock, water, and seasonings.

Heating on medium-high, add the chicken and bring the mixture to a boil. Add orzo and cook for 7 minutes. Reduce heat to low.
Beat together egg and the juice of lemons. Add 1 cup of the hot soup to the mixture and whisk well. Slowly stir into the soup mixture and continue to heat for 1 minute.
Serve topped with chopped fresh parsley and dill if desired.
This delicious soup serves 4-6.

Tips and Variations:
- You can always add additional vegetables to this dish such as fresh spinach.
- The fantastic flavor comes from the fresh herbs. Be sure you use fresh rosemary, fresh dill, and fresh parsley.
- Serve with a side of garlic bread to complete this delicious meal. Pure comfort!
- Add a little white wine to create a different flavor profile.
- Store your leftover soup in an airtight container.
- If you don’t want to use orzo (rice-shaped pasta), feel free to substitute with pastina or any other small pasta shape.
- Top with parmesan cheese.
- You could also add a bay leaf to the chicken stock while cooking. I just never happen to have bay leaves on hand.
- Add a bit of lemon zest to your chicken broth while cooking for more lemon flavor.
This is one of my favorite chicken soup recipes! When you want something different from regular chicken noodle soup, head to your local grocery store and get everything you need to create this dish during soup season and beyond.
