I have a 10-year-old son and he doesn’t like to wear pants or jackets. I just don’t understand it. Personally, I am always cold. Literally. I have Hashimoto’s Disease. So, when I say that I am ALWAYS FREEZING, believe it.
It kills me whenever I see Liam walking to the bus stop in a pair of shorts passing by piles of snow. Doesn’t that make your brain hurt? Logically, it makes no sense. But I live in a town where lacrosse shorts are king.
Why Do Boys Wear Shorts In The Winter?
I’ve heard every excuse in the book. From soup to nuts! It typically starts with “The school is too hot!” and ends with “But all my friends wear shorts!”
Yesterday, on our way to church, I was caught in an excuse loop and I started to write down all of my replies. I posted them on Facebook and was bombarded with parents who float in my same boat. I am not alone. I have to admit that notion gave me a sense of comfort.
Collectively, we all could NOT understand why our children had such an affection for shorts? And don’t get me started on jackets… that’s an entirely different post.
For a little fun – here is the post I uploaded to Facebook. Do any of these responses sound familiar to you? Do you have a son that only wears shorts in the winter?
Things I never thought I would say as a parent. I am omitting Liam’s answers to save you some time. They are all excuses anyway.
It is freezing outside. You cannot wear shorts.
Absolutely not. I don’t care.
There is snow on the floor. No shorts today.
And we are going to church. I don’t care how warm it is in church.
I don’t care about the bet you have going in school. Put on pants.
Do we have to fight every day about shorts? This is insanity.
Then pull some pants out of the hamper if they are all dirty.
Do you want to wear a pair of my pants?
This is happening, Liam. You will wear pants.
(It’s not 9am yet)
Honestly! I can laugh rereading this because it makes me feel like Bill Murray in Groundhog’s Day. This above conversation happens almost daily! What do they say the definition of insanity is because I am living it?! No matter how many times I try to convince my boy to wear shorts in the winter, he refuses to listen.
We have one hard fast rule. If the temperate is before 32 degrees, then he has to wear pants. However, sometimes he rushes out before we have a chance to check. Liam has even been known to bring shorts to school and change once he gets off the bus. Why do I keep fighting it? I should just go with the flow and accept the fact that boys like to wear shorts in the winter. Period.
Just because I don’t agree with it doesn’t make it wrong. Although, we both know I am lying to myself right now and logically wearing shorts in the winter makes absolutely no sense.
Do you have boys that like to wear shorts in the winter? How do you handle it? Do you even care? I found that parents with older children do NOT care about this anymore and just go with the flow. I need to take on that mentality for sure.
Sure, the kids can get crazy, but don’t forget, it all goes by quickly! See what I mean here:
