Whether you like lots of cheese or just a few shavings, it doesn’t matter, this is the perfect recipe the make when you want a bit of crunch with a soft center. It doesn’t matter what brand of air fryer you have, it will work out just perfectly. Your trusty air fryer is good enough! Some even prefer it better than their frying pan, and I actually agree. Less butter and oil are required.

Ingredients For The Absolute Best Grilled Cheese

  • 4 tablespoons butter, softened
  • 4 slices Italian Bread
  • 4 tablespoons cream cheese, softened
  • 4 slices white cheddar cheese
  • 4 slices American cheese
  • hot sauce, optional

How To Make The Perfect Sandwich 

Spread 1 tablespoon of butter on one side of each of the four slices of bread. 

Place two bread slices, butter side down, and spread each piece with 2 tablespoons of cream cheese. Top each piece of bread with two slices of cheddar cheese and two slices of American cheese. Add hot sauce if using. Top with remaining bread slice, butter side out.

Place grilled cheese into the air fryer. Heat at 360 for 5 minutes. Increase heat to 380 and heat for 2-3 additional minutes or until crispy. 

Remove from air fryer and serve immediately. 

Please note: If you make another grilled cheese sandwich, it may cook faster since the air fryer is preheated. You may need to decrease the cooking time 1-2 minutes to avoid the bread burning. 

Makes 2 sandwiches.

Tips and Variations

  • When selecting your pieces of cheese, opt for Pepper jack, Monterey jack, American cheese slices, Provolone cheese, sharp Cheddar cheese, or mild Cheddar cheese.
  • Add a few extra slices of deli ham onto both sides of the sandwich before closing and placing in your Ninja Foodi or Air Fryer Instant Pot.
  • If you don’t want to use slices of white bread, feel free to swap for sourdough bread
  • A little butter goes a long way. A few tablespoons will offer up that beautiful golden color you are looking for.
  • Always opt for real butter when making this cheesy sandwich. And make sure you apply it to each side of the bread. This will offer great flavor. If you don’t have butter, you could substitute out for a light spray of olive oil. This good option will also provide that crispy crust you want.

The best grilled cheese sandwiches are always served immediately. Picky eaters usually have no issue with this meal since it is such a simple recipe. Make sure you have either a side salad, some air fryer french fries, or tomato soup waiting to accompany the meal.
