My full confession is that this classic comfort food dish is probably one of my favorite meals to serve to the kids – EVER. There are so many different variations you can make as well. Throw in a green bell pepper, turn it into a cheeseburger tater tot casserole, or spice things up and add some kick in a few steps to whip this baseline into a Mexican tater tot casserole. That’s what I love most. And the bonus? It’s just as good the next day when you eat it the second time.

If you have extra veggies, feel free to add those in – even frozen vegetables. Whatever works. I’m telling you, this one-dish meal baseline is a game changer… even for picky kids.

Can I Serve This Casserole Beyond Breakfast?

Absolutely! While most people tend to serve tater tot casserole for breakfast due to the eggs, I don’t want you to limit yourself. This would make a great lunch option as well if you are having guests and are planning a spread.

How To Reheat

You will need about 15 minutes to properly reheat this casserole dish. Place the remaining amount in a low-temperature oven (think between 325 and 350 degrees) and allow it to heat up for no more than 15 minutes. You don’t need aluminum foil when reheating. People do use the microwave in a pinch, but just know your tater tots will be soggy if you do that. It’s a choice.

When you are ready to serve this dish to your family and friends, allot an additional 10-15 of cooking time on the backend. Check at the ten-minute mark. If you feel like your dish needs more time, give it another 5.

What Other Veggies Can I Include In This Dish?

If you’d like to include simple ingredients like other vegetables in this casserole, consider: green beans, bell peppers, corn, peas, celery, or broccoli. As far as the protein is concerned, consider different ground meats – like ground turkey and lean ground beef.

If you want to add a different flavor profile, you could even add in a can of cream of mushroom soup or a can of cream of chicken soup to change things up or a little Worcestershire sauce. Cheesy tater tots always go with a fresh side salad. So, be sure to have one on hand for your large family during dinner time if that’s when you decide to serve this dish.

As mentioned, the good news is this family favorite meal can be prepared and served any time of the day. So, whether you want to make a green salad or a side of bacon – that’s up to you! It will always be a good time. Crispy tots know how to please.
