This DIY leather keychain for dad is a great gift idea for Father’s Dad. With just a few simple steps, the most important man in your life can receive a special gift from the heart.
Sunday, June 17 is Father’s Day, and if you are looking for a DIY Father’s Day Gift that dad, grandpa, or your favorite uncle can use, then keep reading because I’m going to show you how to make a simple leather keychain that they will love.
Most craft stores will sell everything you need to make these, right down to bags of leather scraps, which are perfect for this project because the bags often have assorted colors in them so you can make these leather keychains for everyone you know. Don’t forget your coupon!
DIY Leather Keychain Supplies:
- Leather scraps
- Leather straps – you can get more colorful ones like I’ve used in the jewelry section of the craft store
- Key ring
- Leather stamp set – take a coupon, but once you have this you can use it over and over again.
- Mallet (or hammer)
- Sponge
- E-6000 glue
The first step for this DIY Father’s Day gift is to cut your leather into a long thin section that will loop through the key ring comfortably. I used a rotary cutter and mat, but you can simply rule lines on your leather and use scissors. No need to go buy anything fancy. This DIY gift is super simple!!
Next, you need to wet your leather with a sponge. You can see that I’ve only done half of each piece because that’s the only section I was stamping. Don’t make it too wet though. Note: I used the soft side of the sponge, not the coarse side.

Set your leather aside until the color returns to normal, and then you can begin stamping. Place the stamp face down, place the setter firmly inside and hammer on it a couple of times with a mallet (or a hammer will work fine too).
Line up the next letter before removing the first so that you can get your lines straight and your letters evenly spaced.
Take the thin leather strap and thread it through the key ring, the tie the stamped leather strap onto it (see the pictures below).
You can then add a line of E-6000 glue down the center, fold over your leather and hold it together with a clamp (I used a chip clip from the kitchen pantry) to dry.
Note: Make sure your leather has completely dried before using the glue on this DIY leather keychain.
And, there you have it, the perfect gift for the most important men in your life.
