We Don’t Touch One Another Enough

So, as some of you know, I spent a night at a spa with my friends over the weekend. I landed from Disney Saturday night and then Sunday at 7AM I was on the road heading to Connecticut. We planned the trip at least 6 months ago. (Then I got home on Monday night and Tuesday morning I headed to the city for an overnight stay. Needless to say I’m POOPED TODAY).

Anyway, while I was at ‘The Spa at Norwich Inn’ – my favorite haunt with Bill (we’ve been there at least 7 times for overnight stays) – something occurred to me. I am paying someone to rub me down. Yes, I understand that facials are a bit more technical. You need to know the right lotions and potions to put on my skin – so I can’t just walk up to anyone and ask for an analysis. But the massage – isn’t it interesting that we pay people to touch us?

I mentioned this to the group of friends I traveled with and they really didn’t agree with my point. I said – wouldn’t it be great if we were a society that wasn’t afraid to touch one another. For instance, if someone was having a bad day I could go and give them a rub down. Not naked under a sheet – but enough of a rub where it’s relaxing and therapeutic… and free.

It’s a bit crazy to pay to be touched if you think about it. Sports massages etc – YES I get it. You need to understand the body. I’m just talking about helping each other relax. Imagine if I just went up to a friend and started to work on their tension. How would that be viewed? Now, imagine if I did it to a man. Blasphemy! Heaven forbid, right? We have become a society where that’s just not an option anymore.

My friend Lara (blonde in the center) said that her husband is AWESOME at giving massages but she never reciprocates because she doesn’t like to do it. That’s all fine and dandy, but I thought that it was a shame that someone else couldn’t massage her husband. It just wouldn’t be looked at in a positive light if I went over and worked on his neck and back. It would be dirty – when all it is is really being part of a group of people who care for one another.

I might just be delirious – I’ve been running on empty for a good 7 days straight. Is that a unicorn in my office right next to me? Maybe it is. Maybe it isn’t. But I still feel sad that we aren’t in a place where this would be acceptable. We are all connected anyway right? Am I the only one who feels this way? If you have a spouse that massages you – kudos! But what about those people who don’t? Why can’t we all just hop in and help one another out? It doesn’t have to be sexual. It’s really about connecting and healing (and NOT having to spend $150 to get it done).

PS – after the spa ( a day filled with bliss and relaxation) we headed to the casino. LOL! Because you know – that makes sense. I got all wound up after losing my shirt at the roulette table. LOL!

And then we headed to Cracker Barrel and ate the “healthiest” food on the planet…. It’s so bad, but it’s oh so good! 🙂

Wow- what a fantastic time!! I did a spa weekend for my bachelorette getaway,a nd it was awesome. I can't get a massage or facial enough- there really is just something about someone else's hands touching you that makes the stress in your muscles release. Too bad my husband is always as sleepy as I am at night- or I'd ask for a foot/backrub!
