Tea at The Plaza: What to Expect From This Iconic New York Experience

For me, Tea at The Plaza wasn’t just another New York City experience. It was the fulfillment of a long-held dream. I went to my high school prom at The Plaza Hotel, and ever since that night, returning there as an adult has lived quietly on my bucket list. So sitting in the Palm Court, sipping tea and taking it all in, felt incredibly full-circle! It was one of those rare moments where a memory and a dream meet.

Few New York City traditions feel as timeless as afternoon tea at The Plaza. Whether you’re celebrating a milestone, planning a mother-daughter date, or simply craving a moment of elegance in the middle of Manhattan, this iconic experience truly lives up to the hype.

Here’s exactly what to expect before you go, from menu selections and reservations to a few insider tips to help you savor every minute.

Where & When: Location and Timing

Tea is served inside The Plaza Hotel, specifically in the stunning The Palm Court.

Location:
768 Fifth Avenue, New York, NY 10019
(At Central Park South)

Typical Tea Service Times:
Afternoon tea is generally offered daily, with seatings starting late morning and running through the afternoon. Times can vary by season, holidays, and special events, so it’s best to check availability when booking.

The Menu: What’s Included

Tea Selection

You’ll choose from an extensive tea menu featuring classic black teas, green teas, herbal blends, and seasonal offerings. The staff is knowledgeable and happy to help guide your choice if you’re unsure.

As a note, I have a shellfish allergy, and they were very accommodating. It was not a problem to switch out the sandwiches that I could not eat on their preset menu.

Savories

Expect beautifully presented finger sandwiches and savory bites, often including:

  • Cucumber and cream cheese
  • Smoked salmon
  • Egg salad or chicken salad
  • Seasonal chef’s selections

Scones & Pastries

Warm scones are served with traditional accompaniments like clotted cream and preserves. As if that wasn’t enough, there is even a plate of elegant pastries and desserts that feel straight out of a storybook. Rich and decadent.

Is There a Kids’ Menu?

Yes! There were so many families enjoying tea time, and their children had the most adorable plates. The special Children’s menu is actually one of the reasons Tea at The Plaza is so popular with families.

The children’s tea menu is thoughtfully designed and typically includes:

  • Kid-friendly sandwiches
  • Sweet treats and pastries
  • Hot chocolate or child-appropriate tea options

It’s polished but approachable, making it perfect for birthdays, special outings, or a memorable NYC experience with kids.

Champagne: Optional, But Iconic

Champagne is absolutely optional, but if you’re celebrating something special, it’s a lovely upgrade. You can enjoy tea on its own or opt to add a glass of champagne.

You’ll never feel pressured to add it, but it does elevate the experience if you’re in the mood. At the time we visited, it was $30 to upgrade to the champagne package per person.

If champagne isn’t your thing, don’t worry! There is a full bar in the center of the room ready to serve whatever drink you’d like.

Other Helpful Things to Know

  • Reservations: Reservations are highly recommended. It’s just best if you make one.
  • Pacing: Tea is leisurely—plan to spend about 1.5 hours enjoying the experience.
  • Photos: The Palm Court is stunning, and photos are encouraged.
  • Special Occasions: Birthdays and celebrations can often be noted on your reservation for a more personalized touch.
  • Dress Code: I can’t say there is a specific dress code. I saw people in dresses and in jeans, but everyone looked very put together.

Is Tea at The Plaza Worth It?

If you’re looking for a classic New York experience that feels luxurious, memorable, and timeless… yes. It’s not an everyday outing, but it’s exactly the kind of moment you remember long after the tea cups are cleared. It took me 30 years to get there, and I am so happy I finally checked this bucket list item off my list.
