Raising Sweaty Boys of Summer – Teen Deodorant Conversation

This is a sponsored post written by me in partnership with Axe.

Can we chat for a minute about teen deodorant? Summer is coming, people. We’re talking humidity, sweaty activities, and stinky shorts. I mean, don’t get me wrong. I love summer weather and the fact that I get to spend more time with my family. Not to mention – there’s no math homework. RIGHT? However, we are also quickly approaching that time of the year when the “summer stink” begins to cling to our ever-growing teens. Uggh! What is a loving mother to do?

The struggle is REAL, Moms. So, let’s talk.

Teen deodorant chat

Back in February, I started a MomVersation that centered around how to approach the hygiene battle with our teen boys. Yup – our sweet-hearted sons who can’t help but carry a lingering stench with them all day long unless we do something about it.

For me, the decision was simple. I knew bringing my 11-year-old son in on the conversation early was critical. I wanted HIM to be an integral part of the decision-making process ~ asking questions, sharing how he felt, enlightening me with his perspective on hygiene and the like.

The conversation ultimately culminated in a trip together to our local CVS store. My husband and I took our son, to make his own purchases – including teen deodorant amongst other things –  to kick off his new hygiene routine and he opted for AXE products. It was a real bonding experience, to be honest. It was ALL about the boy. I mean, sure – it probably meant more to me than it did him, but I’m going to run with it because these moments are likely to grow few and far between as he gets older.

So – now that we have the conversation started, is there any reason we as moms need to keep it up? You bet!

Why We Need to Keep This MomVersation Going

These kiddos have so much going on and, let’s face it, it’s not usually about using shampoo or applying teen deodorant. Especially now that summer is around the corner and there will be no more homework, no more books, boys are more likely to let the hygiene rules go out the window. Meanwhile, my daughter, on the other hand, still loves perfumes and bubble baths. Liam? Well, boys are different ~ exponentially! Getting my son to remember to make his bed is a task unto itself. Forget about applying his teen deodorant!

Moms, I see you shaking those heads. You know I’m right.

So, summer is inevitably approaching and I know that Liam is going to be spending most of his days riding his bike around the neighborhood with his friends or playing basketball and soccer at the park. All of those activities naturally bring on the summer stink, but the heat of the season will only exacerbate that and it’s not pleasant, Moms.

No – it – is – not.

But how do we keep the chat about hygiene alive with our sons? How do we stay in touch and in sync with our little growing men?

A Little Perspiration…I Mean Inspiration

I absolutely love how Kristina Kuzmic gets the MomVersation going in this video here. She is real, authentic and gets to the point in a way that just connects with moms everywhere. Take a peek and just listen to how genuine and hilarious she is about summer stink. I bet you find it hard not to laugh and relate (I did!).

So, after watching this video about the real side of parenting and summer stink, I decided to begin another casual chat with my own teen son about how to combat the upcoming battle with summer stench. Now that he’s growing up (and, honestly, way too fast, in my opinion), it’s important for him to understand the value of being clean and smelling fresh throughout the day. I also wanted him to know how taking care of himself can provide that extra boost of confidence he needs when out in public and around…(gulp)…girls. Oh, no, we are not having that chat quite yet!

How To Talk To Your Teen About Hygiene

Moms ~ get ready! It’s time for another sit-down ~ be it in the living room, in the car, on a walk or in their room. Order your favorite pizza or go out for ice cream. Whatever fits your comfort level and relationship – the point is, just start talking.

One of the things I recommended to my son was the idea of an afternoon shower. You know, I’m talking about a midday wash-up to rinse away the morning soccer game he may have played with his friends in the park. It’s a great way to reboot, refresh and get ready for an afternoon…of the same exact thing. Right?

But at least he’ll have the opportunity to smell good and feel confident about himself going into it (and not push anyone away with the smell!). After his shower and before he heads out, he applies a few of his favorite AXE products for an extra layer of confidence and he’s out the door! A little teen deodorant goes a long way. Am I right?

So, what are some of the AXE products my son tends to like? He is my consistent one, so he is pretty big on sticking with his familiar go-tos. Right on the top of his list are these deodorant wipes. He keeps them in his backpack no matter where he goes! After a quick game of ball, a bike ride with his buddies or an afternoon hanging at his friends’ house, if he needs a refresher on the road – he always has one. They are AMAZING for teen boys! Trust me!

Don’t let the summer stink linger

As moms, we know conversations with our teens can turn rancid quickly ~ especially if not done properly. We’ve all been there, done that and will probably do that again. However, as I said in the last post, “There is always tomorrow.” Despite the drama of watching them grow up and having to learn how to take of themselves, these are precious times.

I am honestly going to cherish each and every day, laying on the smiles, lessons, hugs, and kisses as thick as my kids will let me. Teen deodorant chats and hygiene discussions are not the worst things to happen to us, moms! In fact, I welcome them!

My job as a mom of teens is to guide, direct, and help my children gain the confidence they need to succeed in life. Sometimes that means tackling the stinky subjects. Okay – let’s do this thing. It may not always be the easiest or most pleasant job in the world, but it’s mine and I’m going to enjoy the opportunities I get with them.

Have you tried the Axe product line before? What do you think? When did you first introduce a teen deodorant into your household for your child?
