This is a sponsored post written by me on behalf of The Nature Conservancy for IZEA Worldwide. All opinions are 100% mine.
Between the big parties, excessive gift buying, and over-the-top decorations, the holidays can sometimes feel a bit environmentally un-friendly. But fear not! There are ways for all of us to chip in and do what we can to help our planet, our neighborhood, and our families.
How To Have A Greener Holiday
Before celebrating with friends and family this year, consider downloading The Nature Conservancy’s Holiday Green Guide for a variety of tips for a greener holiday. This guide offers easy ways to help you and your loved ones live a more sustainable life – especially during the season of giving.
As long as we all continue to do our part, we can ensure that we are creating a more hopeful future for our children. Download The Nature Conservancy‘s Holiday Green Guide here.
I wanted to give you a few of my favorite tips from inside the guide to get you thinking of easy ways to get started today! I know it can all feel so overwhelming – the holidays tend to put me on overdrive myself. Sometimes when I am in a rush or when I feel like I have too much to do, I tend to take the easy way out.
I cut corners. I rush through tasks and become wasteful in the process. My first tip is to slow down. That’s before you download the guide, before you pick up your shopping list, before you do another thing for anyone else this holiday season.
We all need to take a deep breath and slow down. It doesn’t have to feel like a frenzy. It only feels that way because we allow it to be! Choose and prioritize the things that matter most to you and focus on those.
Everything else doesn’t matter in the long run. The holidays are really about being with your loved ones, not finding them the perfect PS4 game. Remember that.
My Favorite Sustainability Tips!
Here is a look at two of my favorite tips that you will find within the Nature Conservancy’s Holiday Green Guide.
More Fun, Less Stuff
We LIVE BY THIS RULE. My family is all about experiences – not products. In fact, every year, we make sure to gift our children something BIG that we all do together. I can’t say what we are gifting them this year just YET because my older two actually read what I write, but believe me when I say it’s all about adventure and travel.
One thing they know is part of their Christmas present is a trip to NYC to see all the holiday favorites. The tree, Santa at Macy’s, ice skating, the famously decorated holiday windows – you name it and it’s on our list. This experience is something the children absolutely look forward to every winter!
Even my mother gifts experiences. This year, the entire family is off to see KONG on Broadway.
Last year, we all went to see the Nutcracker. Those memories will last us a lifetime. My daughter still talks about those dancing ballerinas! In fact, she’s been enrolled in ballet for several semesters now and I think that show had something to do with it. Experiences grow passion and passion creates a personality. Gift your children the world.
Choose A Symbolic Gift
I think this is also a really great way to show some love to family and friends. Whether it’s a sea turtle nest for your animal-loving grandkids or mountain meadow for the avid gardener next door, the symbolic gifts in The Nature Conservancy’s holiday catalog are a perfect way to honor your loved ones and your shared love of nature.
This could particularly feel special for children if you know what their favorite type of animal is because you could show them how their gift is helping firsthand. With a personalized gift like this, you can still make it feel very special and meaningful – as long as you show that you put some thought in the choice. I really love this option.
For example, let’s say that your child loves sea turtles. Right now, if you access the Holiday Green Guide, you will notice that with any donation of $55 or more to the Sea Turtle nest, you will receive a free plush. How wonderful! A small token to offer your child, plus a donation to a cause that is in desperate need, PLUS a chance to educate! Triple home run!
