Things I Wish I Knew During The First Few Months Of Motherhood #MustelaMom

I was the first of my friends to get married and have a baby. I don’t know why I was in such a rush, but that’s the way it happened. I had no one to turn to for advice and ended up becoming “the elder” in my group which was comical because – at the time – I was making it up as we went along. I mean, we made it, don’t get me wrong.  But it could have been a much easier ride had I known a few things.

So, if you are just starting out or if you feel that you need a little pick me up, I wanted to share tips I wish I knew during the first few months of motherhood.

Things I Wish I Knew During The First Few Months Of Motherhood:

  1. You don’t need to do it all by yourself. It isn’t a crime if you bring in your mother for a few days to really help out. Getting assistance is a good thing. I mean a great thing. I’ve seen so many women in the beginning stages proudly attempt to wear every hat. There’s no medal at the end of this race. Don’t wear yourself out! Everyone wants to share in the love and the joy of family. Let them.
  2. There’s no need to keep up with the routines you had prior to welcoming your new bundle of joy to the world exactly as they were. When your child is napping, you shouldn’t worry about using that time to tidy the house or make a full blown meal. You should – instead – sleep and rest and relax. It’s important to refuel during the first few weeks. Just heal. You’ll clean your house for the rest of your life. Right now, it should just be about you. And if your apartment looks like it’s been robbed, see number 1. 🙂
  3. Keep talking to your baby. And no matter what people say, you hold that prince or princess as much as you want because there will come a time when they won’t want to be held anymore. I’m there right now with my oldest two and it’s sad thing. They will eventually outgrow you. Sure, they occasionally come in for a hug and a snuggle, but it’s nothing like the moment that you are in right now. Cuddle with your baby and do it as often as you want. I have my arms wrapped around him all day long and no one will tell me otherwise. This is my last ride and I’m going to enjoy every last second.
  4. Routines are actually very important. Consider warm baths and a nice book before bedtime. And don’t forget baby massages. Use products from Mustela because they are hypoallergenic and paraben, phthalate and phenoxyethanol free. You want to make sure you are choosing products that have baby in mind this early in the game. While you are massaging your child, sing to them or tell them about your day. It’s important to have eye contact and use a soothing voice. Connect. This is your moment. And remember! Have plenty of these moments throughout the day – not just at bedtime. I give Caleb a quick lotion massage with every diaper change. Why not? By touching and loving and caring for my child, he is learning that I am there for him and that I love him.  Mustela products are available at Diapers.com.
  5. You need a plan for all the photos you are about to take. Seriously, I’m behind about 6 years when it comes to making photo books. Get a system! And then while you are at it, share it with me PLEASE! I don’t know what to do with all these digital shots. Maybe make a book once a month or season or year? Whatever it is, get on top of it and put it on your calendar because you are going to blink and have 20,000 on your computer unaccounted for before you know it.
  6. It’s good to read the books, but it’s really all about love. In the end, as long as you are bonding with your baby and loving your baby and allowing that little boy or girl to grow and learn, you are doing right by them. The Jones Family might be signing up for special camps and classes and trips, but that’s not what it’s about. It’s about what happens each night before bedtime. It’s about whether or not you look into their eyes when you speak to them. It’s about what dinner looks like as a family. Are you sitting together? Or is everyone in a different room separated? The foundation is love. Just keep that core solid and you will be good to go.
