Philips AVENT Comfort Breast Pumps: Finding Freedom And Balance In Nursing My Newborn

Before she was born, my plan was to breastfeed my daughter exclusively and I had no plans to research breast pumps because I didn’t feel like I was going to have any need for them. But, just like everything else surrounding motherhood, you can have an idea of what you want, but it won’t always go exactly as planned. Our baby girl arrived four weeks early, and was itty-bitty at just under 5 lbs. Thankfully, she was perfectly healthy, but just as a precaution, spent her first two days of life in the hospital’s NICU. Since we were in separate areas, Penelope was fed formula, and our first successful feeding was in bottle form. Upon going home with our baby girl, I had rented a hospital-grade breast pump and bought two boxes of ready-to-feed formula. I was embracing the idea of supplementing, and the first of many adjustments to our plans. A breast pump became part of our every day plan.

In an effort to get a jumpstart on my milk supply, I began pumping immediately and frequently, using a hospital-grade breast pump. The pump worked well, but lacked functionality for my lifestyle. I didn’t exactly take it easy in my recovery. I was over-the-moon, excited, and couldn’t sit still. I wanted to clean, organize, and entertain. Now while I wasn’t looking to necessarily do all of those things while I was pumping, I did at least hope to be able to check my email, or drink a glass of water. Instead, I was stuck sitting on the edge of my bed, leaning forward to get all the milk flowing into the bottle, no free hands, no mobility- I was a prisoner to the breast pump. It was a period of the day that I didn’t look forward to, and it came all too often. At $90 per month for something I’d never end up owning, it just didn’t make sense to be so uncomfortable.

Introducing The Philips AVENT Comfort Breast Pump

Then I found Philips AVENT Comfort Breast Pumps. Their Double Electric Comfort Breast Pump fulfilled my primary needs, utilizing far less space than my enormous hospital breast pump. It came in a handy (and discreet) messenger bag (that I would totally use for regular purposes) so that I could take it on the go if I needed to. The breast pump is gentler, offering a soft breast cushion for ultimate comfort. I could now relax on my reclining chair rather than leaning foward, because its design is to encourage the flow at an upright position. I am also able to control the speed and suction settings with a button for stimulation mode, as well three expression levels (low, medium, and high). I found the parts to be extremely easy to clean and assemble, and since the milk is pumped directly into a Philips AVENT bottle, all I needed to do was top it off with a Philips AVENT nipple cap, and she was ready to go, for those feeds that weren’t on-breast. Even before trying out this double electric breast pump, I had purchased a wide selection of bottles, and found the Philips AVENT ones to be the most adaptable to my daughter’s needs (some of the others she just plain refused, even at comparable flows). A great perk was that she never seemed to prefer my breast over the Philips AVENT bottles, or vice-versa, so there was an easy transition between the two, and we never encountered any sort of nipple confusion, even in the very early weeks.

One of the reasons I found breast pumping to be necessary, is that I’m a mom-on-the-go. I always prefer to be with my baby and breastfeed her, but that’s not always possible. There’s errands, doctor’s visits, work meetings, etc. keeping me out of the home sometimes. This is where I found the Philips AVENT Manual Comfort Breast Pump to be an extremely handy supplement to my Philips AVENT Double Electric Comfort Breast Pump. It was compact, and I could take it everywhere with me, effectively preventing any sort of engorgement. It was even great for those times that I just didn’t feel like setting up the electric pump in a different room, and could easily pump with the manual. It allowed me the ultimate mobility.

Accessories And Carrying Case

Some other accessories to complement my breastfeeding needs included the Philips AVENT Breast Pads, keeping me from potentially embarrassing leakage throughout the day or night. Something I haven’t seen with the other pumps that is standard with the Philips AVENT is a cap protector over the pump’s cups, preventing contamination from germs or household dust that could get inside.

My experience with Philips AVENT products has been really vital in my daily routine. From completely revolutionizing my day with their breast pump products, to even pacifiers (they’re the best ones I’ve encountered yet, and I love that they come with snap covers to keep them clean), it’s become a staple brand within my motherhood journey.
