Moving Through The Fun And Messy Stages Of Eating With Baby

There comes a time in your family’s life when your baby starts to realize that he / she is eating something different than everyone else. I just love the curiosity! In fact, this baby stage is my absolute favorite. They go from being aware of only themselves to being aware of the entire world around them.

Everything changes then, right? Your tot begins to sit up and actually engage with the items you put in their hands. I just love to see their eyes widen with excitement. With all these new adjustments, there’s one more change that has to be introduced – and that’s to the menu.

I have to be honest with you. Baby food these days makes it really simple to make great choices. There are incredible options available for parents – especially those who are looking for organic, non-GMO products. With food, the simpler the ingredient list – the BETTER. Now, I sound like my grandmother, but it’s true.

In 2005, I didn’t have the options that I had in 2014. I mean, the fact that I was able to feed Caleb purple carrots, pumpkins, barley and kale!? Amazing! I was giving him flavors that I thought I couldn’t introduce until much later in life. As a mom, this was simply amazing.

So, how did I introduce my children to solids? How did we move from apple sauce to apple chunks? Nice and slow and with tiny steps.

First, I introduced rice cereal and allowed my children to understand the concept of swallowing. Believe me mamas, this will take some time and it will be messy. Embrace the mess! Take lots of pictures and invest in bibs because you will go through them like tissue paper.

Once your child has a firm grasp on eating cereal, it’s time to have a little fun. You move from cereals to puréed fruit – one flavor at a time to make sure that they have no allergies. When you have a firm grip on all the fruits and vegetables, you can then start introducing texture.

Texture should not be introduced until your baby is ready. Plum Organics® has a wonderful variety specifically created for tots that have blends like blueberry, pear and purple carrot. They taste great and provide the vitamins and minerals your little one needs to grow.
