This weekend was the 5th Makeup Show in NYC and it was AMAZING!! Every major brand was represented and experts in the industry gave workshops and seminars to makeup artists and other industry insiders. covered both days of the event. On the first day, I checked out the brands in their various booths. Most of the booths were offering insane sales on their products, while some gave samples for artists to try out.

The Mac booth included two girls, dressed with body paint on them, to demonstrate their latest line of colored makeup. I am a loyal Mac fan and have long been obsessed with their Studio Fix foundation so I was pretty excited to see what they had to offer.

Long before Temptu made airbrushing accessible to the average consumers, industry insiders have been using the airbrush to achieve a flawless, even look for runways and shoots. Temptu brought out four new blush shades just in time for summer and they are amazing. They demonstrated airbrushing and the best techniques to use.

I am probably late to the game but I was only recently introduced to Makeup For Ever. During the Blogger Preview on Saturday, one of the artists raved about their benefits and I keep running into people that think their HD Foundation is a thing of the gods. I finally caved and bought a bottle to try it out. It was 45% off at the show so, as you can imagine, the line was insane. They also introduced a new Acqua Cream, that can be worn anywhere on the face. It’s smudge, tear, and waterproof and available in 21 shades. Again, EVERYONE was talking about this.

Makeup artists are also obsessed with Crown brushes. They’re long-lasting, super soft to the touch and perfect for flawless application. I found the perfect angled blush brush for only $9.

I stopped by the Dinair booth and pretty much went crazy. Sit me in a makeup chair and that tends to happen. The Dinair makeup artist airbrushed zebra stripes over my eye shadow for a foxy, daring look and airbrushed the tops of my curls blue and green. We decided it was in tribute to Avatar. She also pressed an old doily on my hand and airbrushed over it for a stunning night on the town look. You can do this with skin-colored makeup, if you’re not one to stand out too much.

Clearly, I was in the mood to! I loved my blue hair!! Realistically, this is usually done on movie sets and shoots but you can airbrush your regular makeup on, daily. Its fast and you’re guaranteed not to get that line at your chin.

DAY 2 of the New York Makeup Show

Day 2 of the NY Makeup Show for me consisted of checking out a few seminars. I attended Perfecting Complexion for Women of Color with Brandalyn Fulton for Face Atelier and Autumn/Winter 2010 Trend with Romero Jennings and Keri Blair for MAC Cosmetics. I chatted with Brandalyn after her seminar about if there is really much difference between makeup for women of color and other women. She told me that one thing women of color often overlook is moisturizing.

This is important for all races and skin types. Makeup can only camouflage so much when the skin isn’t properly hydrated. Brandalyn also said that its really important to know your undertone. It can be pink or yellow and this changes the colors and shades that look best on your skin. Brandalyn told me something really important that applies to all skin types and races.

I’m huge on applying foundation with my fingers mainly because its quicker and I think brushes full of product are gross. Brandalyn said, though, that brushes are so much more hygienic. Most women don’t wash their hands before applying makeup, thus putting tons of bacteria on the face.

Autumn/Winter 2010 Trend with Romero Jennings and Keri Blair for MAC Cosmetics was focused on trends from the runway. Romero and Keri have been with Mac for over 10 years and do makeup for the fashion shows in NY, Paris and Milan. Their presentation was amazing and their onstage chemistry was fun to watch. Romero showed a new smoky look and Keri did a modern, heavy-lipped look. Romero was so excited about the disappearing brow. He used concealer to fade the eyebrow at the ends.

To give the skin an airbrushed look, he stippled the foundation on the skin. He used contouring and chiseling to define the cheekbones and warm up the forehead. Romero’s tip for applying contouring bronzer is to start heavy by the ears and blend into the cheeks in a C motion.

At the New York Makeup Show, he completed the look with a sexy smoky eye and nude lips. Keri gave her model a bold ruby lip, which was huge on the runways this past season. By keeping the rest of the face neutral and making the skin fresh and dewy, the lips stood out for a sexy, nighttime look.
