In the next few days I’m going to post how to make a ‘torta’ – or a Maltese meat pie. It’s absolutely one of my all time favorite things to eat. I used to live with my grandmother growing up and she would make this for me at least once a week. SO GOOD.
In the meantime, let’s get the basics down – how to make dough. I spent a few hours with my family last night and had my grandmother WORKING IT in the kitchen. So, I do have to thank her for her efforts.
How To Make Basic Pie Dough – Recipe From My Grandmother
Step 1: Take 3 cups of flour and 2 sticks of butter at room temperature and put them in a bowl.
Step 2: Mix. As you work the dough, you will notice a lot of the butter will stick to your hands. Rub them together and put back into bowl and mix again. Mix. Mix. Mix.
Pour 1/2 cup of water into the mixture and combine. Then pour 1/4 cup of water into the mixture and combine once again. When you are finished, it should look like this:
Step 3: Cover and refrigerate for 1 to 2 hours.
You’re… DONE!!! It’s not that hard at all! {Editor’s note: We didn’t ad any salt because the meat that goes in this pie is very salty. Depending on your recipe, you might want to season with salt.} – Stay tuned! The ‘torta’ is coming up tomorrow!!
Do you have a recipe you’d like to share? Please shoot me an email and send along pictures and step by step instructions. I can’t wait to get an invite to inside your kitchen!
