This broccoli cheese casserole recipe is both cheesy and delicious. A made-from-scratch Thanksgiving dinner favorite that can be enjoyed all year round.
Creamy side dishes are my absolute favorite to make, especially ones with crunchy toppings. Perfect for the holiday season and beyond.
And did I mention how simple this vegetable side dish is to make? It’s a traditional side that I’m sure you’ve had a million times with string beans, just updated. I LOVE broccoli and try to incorporate it into a delicious side dish as often as possible.
Broccoli Cheese Casserole Ingredients
- 2 (10-ounce) packages frozen chopped broccoli, cooked and drained
- 1 cup mayonnaise
- 1 cup grated sharp cheddar
- 1 (10 3/4-ounce) can condensed cream of celery soup
- 2 eggs, lightly beaten
- 1 can of French’s® French Fried Onions
- Salt and black pepper to taste
How To Make Broccoli Casserole
Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Spray a 13 by 9-inch baking dish with vegetable oil cooking spray.
Cut your broccoli into bite-sized pieces. Then cook using a large skillet. I used frozen broccoli, but you can use fresh if you prefer. Just add a bit of olive oil.
In a large mixing bowl, combine mayonnaise, cheese, soup, and eggs. Mix the cheesy sauce well. Then add broccoli one spoon at a time and mix.
Once combined, place the mixture in the prepared baking dish. Top with fried onions. Bake for 35 minutes or until set and browned.
Serve warm and enjoy! Your friends and the entire family will ask for this comfort food side dish recipe after giving it a taste. Yes, that’s even including the picky eaters.
Tips and Variations
- Consider adding chicken to this casserole to make it a complete meal.
- As mentioned, you could swap out the broccoli for string beans if desired.
- To store leftovers, place the remaining food in an airtight container. Keep in the fridge for up to three days.
- If you don’t have fried onions, you could substitute them with buttery crackers like Ritz Crackers.
- Another way to make this a full dinner idea is to add pasta or white rice to the meal. This will keep the dinner vegetarian.
- If you don’t have sharp cheddar cheese, consider adding shredded mozzarella cheese or even Monterey Jack.
- Want a creamier taste? Add cream cheese or sour cream to your cheesy broccoli casserole.
- Here’s another crunchy topping idea: Top with parmesan cheese and bread crumbs instead of the fried onions. You will need to add a little melted butter to the bread crumbs before you do and put back in the oven for a few minutes to brown.
- Add garlic powder and onion powder to your creamy cheese sauce when preparing. You could even sautee a fresh yellow onion chopped.
- If you don’t have cream of celery or chicken soup, opt for cream of mushroom soup.
This is one of my favorite recipes to make! The whole family asks for seconds every time I do. I usually make a second casserole dish and freeze it for the following week. You just need to make sure you wrap it up tightly to store.
Whether you are preparing for a holiday dinner, large gatherings with friends, or just looking for something to put on the dinner table, this comforting side dish will win everyone over.

Good to know about the fried onions. We made this for Thanksgiving but the onions would have made it so much more crunchy and good!
