Blueberry Dump Cake Recipe For Abominable Movie Night

This post is sponsored by Universal Pictures Home Entertainment.

This week, my son and I made this blueberry dump cake recipe because it is such an easy dessert to make when you want to make something sweet for your next family movie night but don’t have a lot of time or ingredients on hand. It is a family staple for sure!

And we had something to celebrate!  Abominable, the #1 original animated movie of the year, is now on available on Digital and is coming to Blu-ray and DVD on December 17.  So we wanted to be sure to have a family movie night so we could watch it again – but this time within the comforts of our own home.

family movie night

We loved it so much in the theatre and now our family can watch the magic under a warm blanket and with our favorite stuffed animal.  Plus, the new release features over 1-hour of added bonus content including 2 original shorts!

And naturally, we needed some sweets! Why did we choose a blueberry dump cake? Because one of the best scenes in the film is when Everest the yeti uses his magic to make blueberries grow into enormous larger than life sizes!

The film is all about epic adventure, magical experiences, and finding your way home. Plus it has a very inspiring message, make Abominable your next family movie night pick! Before we get into the recipe, watch the trailer below!

In case you wanted to recreate this delicious family dessert on your own, here is our recipe for you to enjoy. Don’t forget to get your kids in the kitchen to help.

I just want to note that I know the photos showcase my end results in small dishes, but that is just how I served them to my children. I actually used a 9.5×13 pan to cook the dump cake in the oven and I will explain this in my recipe. Stay tuned!

How To Make Blueberry Dump Cake

spread blueberry pie filling on bottom of pan

Preheat your oven to 375 degrees.  Get a 9.5 X 13 cake pan and your ingredients. Spread your blueberry pix filling on the bottom of your pan. I did not grease the bottom of the pan with cooking spray or butter. This recipe doesn’t call for it.

pour cake mix over blueberry pie filling

Add in about 3/4 of your fresh blueberries on top of your blueberry pie mix. This will give your blueberry dump cake recipe that fresh taste once you dig in. The remaining 1/4 of fruit will go on as part of your last step. So, keep to the side for now.

Now, evenly sprinkle your cake mix right on top of your blueberry pie mix. Your children will love this part. Usually, with baking, there’s a lot more order – but with a dump cake… you are literally just dumping ingredients on top of one another. It is so FUN!

fresh blueberries as topping

Slice your butter thinly and place it all over the top of the cake mix. Make sure you cover the entire pan with these slices. You do not need to melt the butter. Just make sure you have enough pieces all over your pan. If you end up not using 1 1/2 sticks of butter – it’s ok.

Now add in your remaining berries. You are ready to bake!! Your oven should be hot and ready to roll. Place your dish in the oven – uncovered – for 40-45 minutes.
