Thinking About Getting A Greenhouse: Where Are My Gardeners?

Being a Long Island resident, real estate space is sparse… unless you are a multi-millionaire. I happily live on a 1/4 of an acre. Yes, you heard me – but that’s the NORM in my neck of the woods. Either way, I have been thinking about getting a greenhouse for some time now. I ripped up all the flowers on my property when we moved here 5 years ago because I am deathly afraid of bees and bugs. It’s a sickness. I cannot HANDLE insects. So, if I want to grow a garden, it has to be isolated from the rest of the world. I don’t want to attract anything new. PLUS we have wild rabbits in this town – so I’m afraid they are going to eat everything up.

That’s where the greenhouse comes into play. I think it would be really special to grow my own herbs and vegetables and then feed them to my children. I can’t imagine how wonderful that must feel – to be able to just walk into your backyard and pick what’s for dinner (literally).

Because I lack space, I’m looking into these smaller compartments. I can’t expect to harvest a farm – just enough to green my thumbs a bit. 🙂 Do you garden? Do you plant food or just flowers? Any tips?? What happens in the winter? Do you have to bring it in doors??

Would love to hear what you have to say! I’m very new to this. Growing up, we had a fig tree – that was IT!

Do you have any community gardens where you live? My town has farmland that is broken up into various plots for the public to rent each season. You can purchase a little square of the land and plant whatever you'd like. Here's a look at the program near me: http://www.lawrencetwp.com/rec-community-gardens.html May help keep the bugs away from your home, too. :)
