Life gets busy. Between work, school schedules, laundry piles, and never-ending to-do lists, it’s easy for your relationship to get pushed to the back burner. My husband and I recently realized we needed a little reset—a chance to step away from the chaos and remember that, before kids and carpools, we were just us.

So, we planned a mini getaway to Greenport, Long Island, and I can honestly say it was one of the best decisions we’ve made in a while.

A Change of Scenery: The Menhaden Hotel
We stayed at the Menhaden Hotel, a beautiful boutique hotel that instantly made us feel like we were a world away. From the rooftop fire pits to the cozy, modern rooms, everything about it invited us to slow down and reconnect.
Without the usual distractions, we had time to talk—really talk. We shared meals without checking our phones, walked through the quiet streets of Greenport, and laughed over memories we hadn’t thought about in years.

One of our favorite parts of the stay was how the Menhaden encouraged simple, meaningful moments. In the evenings, we played board games in the cozy lounge—no screens, no distractions, just the two of us and a little friendly competition.

Later, we headed up to the rooftop where we roasted s’mores by the fire and shared a bottle of wine under the stars. It was the kind of night that reminded us how much joy can be found in slowing down and just being together.

Wine, Conversation, and Connection
One of the highlights of our trip was visiting Macari Vineyards. Sipping wine while looking out over the vines was not only romantic—it was grounding. There’s something about being in a peaceful, beautiful setting that helps you tune back in to your partner.

We spent the afternoon chatting about everything and nothing, savoring the wine and the moment.

Why It Matters
This trip reminded me how important it is to make space for just the two of us. It’s so easy to lose sight of your relationship when you’re in the thick of parenting or daily stress. But taking even a short trip gives you the chance to:
- Reconnect emotionally
- Create new shared experiences
- Recharge individually and as a couple
- Appreciate each other outside of the parenting roles
You don’t need a long vacation or a lavish plan—just some intentional time together, away from the regular routine.

Encouragement for Other Couples
If you’ve been feeling like ships passing in the night, this is your sign: plan the getaway. Whether it’s a weekend road trip or just one night away, the investment in your relationship is worth it. Our time in Greenport gave us a fresh perspective, renewed energy, and a deeper connection—and that benefits our entire family.
So book the room. Find the sitter. Pack the bags. Your relationship deserves it.
