I am such a commercial junky… especially during Football Season! I feel like that’s when the best of the best hits the tube. Verizon has a spot running right now – ‘FiOS Football Girl’ – that revolves around a girl who uses FiOS to show up her older brother when he refuses to allow her to join in on a game he is playing with friends. The power of the Internet!! HA! The girl ends up coming back schooling the older boys and then some.
Great commercial – but more times than not – sports primarily focus around men and their sons, right? Well, I have a deep dark confession. I grew up believing that girls don’t play sports. It took me a really long time to let that go and to embrace the fact that girls SHOULD play sports. It actually took me moving to Long Island to accept that fact. I had to become part of a community that had a sports culture embedded deep within its roots. My NYC childhood consisted of hanging outside on my stoop and the occasional bike run to Astoria Park. But my daughter is growing up with an entirely different experience. Natalie loves tennis, dance, kick line and cheerleading. She even loves to play basketball with her friends after school for fun. As long as she is running around with a group, she is one happy child.
I live in Garden City, New York. Look us up and you will learn that we live and die for lacrosse. I’m talking country-wide powerhouses. People start training their sons AND daughters at a very early age because everyone believes that there is a benefit to playing and loving and owning the game. Our girls RULE the field and believe me – watching Natalie’s friends hit the grass gives all of us such great pride! The confidences that these girls exude… it’s something I never knew as a young tween.
