Teaming Up With Toyota And ‘Meals Per Hour’ To Help Hurricane Sandy Victims Today

I have been quietly waiting for this day to come – eagerly anticipating its arrival. As a blogger, I get offered a wide variety of opportunities (spanning from attending red carpet events to toilet paper review write ups).  This project is one that is near and dear to my heart because not only is it benefiting people who were impacted in Queens – the borough where I was raised  – but it’s also a chance for me to remind friends to plug back in and get involved.

When Hurricane Sandy hit Long Island, everyone I know chipped in. We raised money, collected toys/food/clothing, made trips to distressed areas and more. It was weeks and weeks of an ongoing effort. And then … it all just ended. Why? Because life goes on, people get busy and the news stops talking about the devastation. Well, it isn’t over. There are still thousands of people who are displaced all over the region and who need our help. Food distribution locations cannot keep up.

Today, I am heading to assist Metro World Child, a mobile food distribution unit in the Far Rockaways with Toyota and their ‘Meals Per Hour’ program.  Toyota is helping soup kitchens streamline their processes and make their distribution more efficient. More on this later.

As of right now, I’m off! Look out for more information on this project over the next few weeks. I am SO HAPPY to be working with Toyota and the following local bloggers on this initiative:

  • Sian Pierre Regis, Swagger New York + MTV Act: Founder and editor-in-chief of Swagger New York and contributor for MTV Act;
  • Migdalia Rivera, Latina on a Mission + Stiletto Media: A New Yorker, single mother of two, and popular Hispanic blogger; and
  • Mary Catherine Brouder:  Documentarian and journalist with a focus on human rights, who has reported for CNN, CBS, IFC, PBS, among others.
