Planning On Taking Your Kids On A Long Flight: Here’s 5 Tips To Keep You Sane

I’ve learned a few lessons over the last few weeks. In fact, I’d say that my children taught me most of them. They are capable of much more than a theme park vacation. I am so very proud of my little ones and all that they’ve accomplished with us this month.

It’s exhausting – make no mistake – but it’s also character building. However there is a price to pay – and that’s the time it takes to get to your final destination. Luckily, overseas flights come equipped with television /video game consoles. Oddly enough, the kids were actually ok during the entire trip. I didn’t need to open up my bag of tricks ONCE.

However, when we had a layover between two flights – that’s when the party started. So, here’s a few tips that will help you keep your sanity:

Overseas Traveling with Kids Tip #1: Bring snacks and drinks onto the plane

Yes, you are offered dinner and breakfast during an overseas flight, but there is a lot of space in between. To be fully hydrated, you need more than the two drinks offered while on board. Do yourself a favor and bring on a bottle of water for you and the kids. I packed a TON of snacks from home, so you don’t have to spend a lot of money at the airport. Remember you can bring food with you through security, just not liquids. I always FORGET THIS!

Overseas Traveling with Kids Tip #2: Hit up the Dollar Store

Again, I’m not asking you to spend a ton of money here – but a handful of new gadgets to play with will keep your children occupied. Most dollar stores carry coloring books as well. I bought a bunch of little nuggets that I didn’t let the kids see until we were in the air. This packet also came out while we were waiting for our second plane. They were content for about 2 hours and then we went started to move around a bit. Walked around the airport. Took bathroom breaks 2 at a time – anything to keep them occupied. It helps – trust me.

Overseas Traveling with Kids Tip #3: Let me bring on one of their favorite dolls.
