Guys, it happened. I spent the day at the White House with Michelle Obama and enough time has passed in order for me to process the experience. It was a whirlwind of a trip – I wasn’t even in DC for 24 hours – but it was worth the ride!
Babble invited 35 bloggers to attend a half-day session with First Lady Michelle Obama and her team to talk about one of her fondest initiatives – Let’s Move. Before I get into the full program, I wanted to show you a little video I took highlighting some of the rooms we were able to walk through. RUMOR HAS IT that on a typical tour, these rooms are off limits.
You can peek in from behind a velvet rope… but not walk through. You know I touched everything.
Onto the Let’s Move Program!
Did you know that one in three children in America can be classified as obese? This is a national epidemic. This is something that needs our attention – every family // every school // every community. It cannot be ignored anymore.
We have moved from an active state to a docile state. Our jobs have changed. Our habits have changed. Our recreational activities have changed.
Instead of playing soccer with their friends after school, our children are playing soccer on their iPads. The digital age has pushed us forward intellectually leaps and bounds, but what has it done to our health status?
According to LetsMove.Gov,
Let’s Move! is a comprehensive initiative, launched by the First Lady, dedicated to solving the challenge of childhood obesity within a generation, so that children born today will grow up healthier and able to pursue their dreams. Combining comprehensive strategies with common sense, Let’s Move! is about putting children on the path to a healthy future during their earliest months and years.
Giving parents helpful information and fostering environments that support healthy choices. Providing healthier foods in our schools. Ensuring that every family has access to healthy, affordable food. And, helping kids become more physically active.
So critical! I want to talk to you as a parent. We are the lowest common denominator. What can we do for our families? Here’s some great advice from Let’s Move:
Menu planning is critical because when I am stuck and when I don’t have enough food in my house (the right food), we end up ordering out and making bad choices. Being prepared is always the right solution for any issue.
The First Lady said something so IMPACTFUL to the group of woman that she addressed yesterday. It truly resonated with me. She compared eating healthy to going to the dentist or math homework.
If your children came home and said that they didn’t like going to the dentist… would you tell them that it’s ok and they don’t have to care for their teeth anymore? Of course not! Now, what about math homework?
If they came home complaining that they absolutely hated math, would you tell them that they didn’t have to do it because it was too much of a bother? NO WAY! SO WHY – AS PARENTS – DO WE CAVE SO EASILY WHEN IT COMES TO HEALTHY EATING?
Why do some parents say, “my child just likes plain pasta with butter or chicken nuggets”? Why is that battle not worth the fight?
It is worth the fight. Healthcare is the ultimate fight. Being healthy and feeling well – are a luxury and a blessing. When you are sick and in bed, don’t you always tell yourself that you will NEVER take for granted feeling healthy again? I know I do! LOL!
Fruits and vegetables and whole grains are the key. An exercise regime is the key. Mindful eating is the key. These lessons must be taught down to our children at an early age so they don’t struggle with something that they don’t have to for the rest of their lives.
I just started a fitness regime at 38 and it was pretty darn hard to get that going. I’m not going to do that to my children. I constantly encourage them to join me on my runs and while they are still protesting, I know that I won’t let up until they do. This is our new lives and I am so thankful that I woke up to it all.

What Has Let’s Move Accomplished So Far?
Just to name a few accomplishments, Let’s Move:
- eliminated all junk food marketing in schools (THANK YOU)
- is helping over 30 million children eat healthier school meals each and every day
- is proud to be part of nearly 1 in 4 American Cities, Towns or Counties
- has created salad bars in schools that feed over 2 million children
- is found in schools where 10 million students now strive to get at least 60 minutes of physical activity a day
- has changed the concept of daycare dining. Now 1.6 million kids attend healthier facilities where fruits and veggies have now replaced cookies and juice
- is responsible for changing thousands of chain restaurant menus – creating healthier options for kids and cutting 6.4 trillion calories from their products
They even teamed up with Sesame Street and put some of our favorite characters on fruits and veggies to help toddlers want to eat healthy snacks. By the way, Sesame Street licensed that all for FREE. Amazing. (PS – other characters are on the way)
