Facebook Forms Parents Advisory Team To Focus On Safety

Safety online continues to remain a top priority for parents – especially during this digital age.I mean, can you think of a time when our children weren’t connected to the iPad? It seems so long ago!  Keeping young people safe online has been a priority for Facebook for many years. With more and more young people going online, engaging parents on this topic is more important than ever. It’s not only important for companies to do their part, but it’s critical for caregivers to stay aware of the latest and greatest in today’s tech news.

Have you used the Facebook Parents Portal yet? It was designed to help give parents ways to talk to their children about what they do online. Working with organizations like the National PTA and Blue Star Families, the social media giant has brought parents together to gather their views on how they’re navigating parenting in a tech-enabled world.

And they are listening too!

They’ve gathered a team of advisors that includes professionals in the fields of online safety, child development, and media from organizations such as the Family Online Safety Institute, Center on Media and Child Health, MediaSmarts, the Yale Center for Emotional Intelligence, and the Fred Rogers Center — all waiting to hear about your concerns.

Here’s a list of the current advisors:

  • Rick Fernandes, Fred Rogers Center
  • Dr. Lewis Bernstein, Sesame Workshop (retired)
  • Dr. Kevin Clark, George Mason University, Center for Digital Media Innovation and Diversity
  • Dr. Robin Stern, Yale Center for Emotional Intelligence
