Bibhu Mohapatra Spring 2011

Bibhu Mohapatra chose to show his collection as a stationary presentation. What a great idea! Attendees got the chance to really examine the clothing for a much longer time than if a model wore it down a runway. Bibhu Mohapatra is an Indian designer and an FIT alumni, so I was really excited to see his collection. A mix of clean power suits and elegant dresses, his clothing is well-made and designed to gently accent the curves of a woman’s body.

The collection started with a linen jacket and dress combo that looked very ladies-who-lunch. Worn with a black belt, this can easily work at the office. There was also a beautiful white shift with long full sleeves. This was belted at the waist. Complete with a modest hemline, this is perfect transition wear. It works at work and for dinner after.

The evening wear was based on a comforting palette of green, black, cream and blue, among others. The first dress that I loved was a deep green, short sleeved long dress with a black belt halfway around the waist. This dress is perfect for women who aren’t comfortable showing their shoulders. Its elegant without showing much skin. For the woman who likes to command a bit of attention, there was a black and white gown with cutout details on one side and generous layers of chiffon cascading to the hem. In a dusty pink was a strapless gown with an asymmetric hemline. There was also a beautiful one-shoulder version with bodice detailing.

All in all, the collection was beautiful. The clothes have definite commercial appeal and can be adapted to many body types. To see more of Bibhu Mohapatra’s work, go to
