Academy of Art University Spring 2011 Collection

The Academy of Art University has been showing collections from graduating students at NYFW since 2005. The chosen few this year were clothes by Jungah Lee, Cara Chiappetta, Louie Llewellyn, Xiang Zhang, April Howard, Camilla Olson, Maria Korovilas and a print collaboration done by a group of students from various departments.

My favorites include a heavily jeweled collection that was juxtaposed by creamy, pastel, lighter fabrics. The beading was done on the hem and the edge of a jacket, as well as a pair of underpants. The models wore flat, sportish sandals with these pieces. One of the other collections featured different printed fabrics gathered, pleated and flared on the same garment. In theory, this sounds like a disaster of mammoth proportion but it worked. The two adorable kids strutting their stuff didn’t hurt the cause, either. Menswear was also a welcome addition to the show. Everyone looks good in black, as the designer demonstrated, with black hooded tops and comfortable pants.

Can I just say that this school puts to shame the two top fashion design schools in the country, Parsons and FIT, both of which are located right here is NYC? The level of exposure and professionalism that these students will no doubt glean from showing at NYFW is priceless.
