Tech Help: How To Deauthorize A Computer For iTunes (When You No Longer OWN The Computer)

I love Apple. In fact, if you look at my desk, all you will see are items that have the apple sign. It’s a bit creepy… but I’m a girl that’s hooked.

I bought a Macbook earlier this year and couldn’t authorize it to my account because I already had 5 computers assigned to my email address. Small problem – I didn’t own 4 of the computers anymore. They were computers I either had in college or while I was a consultant (7 years ago). What was I going to do?

There is a FLAW (yes, I said it) with the way Apple lets you authorize computers. You can’t exactly see which ones are on your account and there’s no way of unchecking them from your current computer. You have to be ON the actual computer to deauthorize that particular PC or MAC. Not so helpful in my situation.

Anyway, I found a round about way of doing it and I thought I’d share because I am sure I’m not the only one with this issue.

You actually have to deauthorize ALL your computers at once and then start over. Apple allows you to do that from your account screen.

Here’s how you get there.

Go to the iTunes store. On the top right part of the screen, you should see your email address. Click on it.

Apple will ask you to log in. Go ahead and do that.

I can’t show you the whole screen because it has all my info on it, but right on the top you should see your address, your country, and then something that says “Computer Authorization”. I only have one now because I cleared out all my old computers earlier this week.

You need to deauthorize ALL computers here. It will ask you if you are sure. You say yes. It will ask you to wait a few minutes. You will. And then when the screen refreshes you can reauthorize the computer you are using BACK to your apple account. Then if you own a laptop, repeat the step on that machine as well.

This will clear all old computers you no longer own off of your Apple account.

Hope this helps!

That’s a pain! Glad you found a way around it. I live in England and when I had the same problem I just went to an Apple store and they just deauthorized the 3 computers that I no longer used, and it only took them about 1 minute to do so I was really pleased đŸ™‚
