NYFW: Yoana Baraschi Fall 2011

So let’s play a game. Its called Spot the male model at the Yoana Baraschi Fall 2011 Presentation. Androgynous male model Andrej Pejic showcased one of the looks and you are going to fall off your chair when you see a picture of him. First, let’s talk clothes (should I mention that the same ethereal music was used at the Vivienne Tam show the day before? It suited both collections well but what a coincidence!).

Yoana Baraschi used to work for Betsey Johnson and that influence is clearly seen in some cartoonish images on her dresses. The contrast of these images and her lady-like silhouettes is actually kind of mind-blowingly cool. Most, if not all the models wore black stockings with black shoes, which, note to self, elongates the legs. As with most other collections this season, the lengths were modest and the silhouettes very forgiving. These are clothes you can breathe and live in. From boxy shifts to 50’s style polka-dotted dresses, cinched at the waist with long sleeves, the looks had a little something for every body type. Fur, another huge trend this season, was also used for a jacket and vests. One of my favorite dresses was a simple shift with an olive at the chest area and the word “aspirin” close to the hem. I loved that this dress made fun of the seriousness that can sometimes be fashion. If you’re looking for the new pant length, Yoana made it clear that she thinks its the flood-water length. Cut above the ankle but not skinny at all, these pants are best worn with pumps but can also work with stockings and booties.
