When You Want To Go All In For Your Kid’s Dreams: The House Movie

This post is in partnership with Warner Bros. Pictures.

I love movies. I especially love watching them in the movie theater. There’s still something fun and magical about the experience. It’s Bill and my #1 date night move! When it comes to movies, I like it all, from aliens and zombies to horror and drama. But, in the end, I really do love a fun comedy. There’s just nothing quite like it. Laughing just lifts your spirits. It’s just such a feel-good exercise. Now, when you add in some amazing actors and a really great story line, I’m all in, especially when family and parenting is involved! Those topics really hit so close to home, you know? I just love it. That’s why I really think I am going to LOVE the new comedy The House, starring Will Ferrell and Amy Poehler.

The movie is about Scott and Kate Johansen (Ferrell and Poehler) who lose their daughter Alex’s college fund, so they become desperate to earn it back to help her pursue her dream of attending a university.  With the help of their neighbor, they decide to start an illegal casino in his house.

I. Love. This.

Wanting The Best For Your Kids

I mean, as parents we always want what’s best for our kids, right? Take Natalie for example, her true loves are singing, dancing, and theater. We put Natalie in all the local shows and classes she’s asked for and we are adding even more! The family makes a day of hitting Broadway shows and ballets! With that started as a little class hosted by my town has grown into a 5-week-long summer camp at a local college along with the school musical and four dance and performance classes a week! She’s all in for ballet, jazz, musical theater, and modern dance!

When It Makes You Crazy

As much as Bill and I love to see her perform and really get into her singing and dancing, I have to admit that it’s not all rainbows and unicorns. Sure, we haven’t lost her college tuition just yet (well, that wouldn’t be all that much to lose anyway), but there have certainly been some crazy times! And by crazy, I mean that it’s made ME crazy!

Do you know how tough it is to get her hair into that super tight, slicked back dancer’s bun? It’s torture! She doesn’t even like me to COMMENT about her hair, let alone make it look like that!

Or how about getting her ready for the rehearsals, recitals, and who knows what else? I need a planner dedicated to her and her activities, LOL! Sometimes there’s double booking, PB&J dinners in the car en route to a class, or screaming and yelling because she decided she’d rather just “relax today.” Don’t even get me started on finding some of the gear or costumes she needs! There aren’t enough stores or websites in world sometimes. Lastly…do you know how many times I hear  THE SAME SONG over and over and over again? Do You know what it’s like to have your daughter put on 87 outfits and sing the same five show tunes every single day when she gets home? I don’t care how great the song is or how cute she looks in her leotard…it can wear on a girl!

What Will The Future Bring?

Will she be a professional dancer, singer, or baker? Maybe, maybe not. Who knows? You just can’t tell, right? Some people just know from an early age what they really love and want to do for the rest of their lives. Not me, no way, I had no idea. Sometimes, I still wonder if I do. LOL. So, if I get a little crazy and go all-out in supporting Natalie’s (Liam’s and Caleb’s) dreams, then so be it. That’s what I’m here for, that’s what moms do. There’s no reason for me to stop now.

I do some crazy things that even have me questioning my sanity at times, but that’s cool It’s all part of the game. And, anyway, how boring would life be without all the chaos???

Bill is a guy trying to be dad and husband while running an online media company at home with his wife. Piece of cake.

  1. It takes a special kind of awesome to do all the things you do to keep her in dance and all the places she needs to go for it! You are a super mom.

  2. This movie is going to be great, I cannot wait to watch it and I am certain many parents will be able to relate to it on some level. What a beautiful post to showcase the movie and your parental life 🙂

  3. When you get into the peri-empty nest stage, life gets to be so lonely and you crave for attention. You get those feelings that you did everything you could to give your kids a good future and then they move out and you’re all alone. Parenthood is confusing. LOL.
