Exclusive Chat With Olympian Dana Vollmer
I had the chance to chat with Pampers athlete Dana Vollmer while she competed at the Rio 2016 Olympics. I’m a member of the Pampers Baby Board and Dana wanted to chat a bit about the Thank You, Mom Campaign, training as an Olympian and what life’s like once the when she isn’t competing.
Once the Olympics end, what is the first thing that you are going to do when you get home?
Hug my son, Arlen, and probably not let him go for a while. People keep asking me if I’m going to go on vacation, but after traveling for 31 days all I want to do is be at home and hang out with my family. Other than that, I would also love to have a spa day – A body scrub, a facial…the whole thing.
How do you protect your skin and complexion while spending so much time in chlorine water?
I’m a huge aloe fan. It’s the first thing I put on my face followed by lotion. Overall, my skin does take a beating being in and out of the pool…hence the facial I mentioned earlier!
How many hours a day do you spend working on conditioning? Can you ever turn it off?
I do two hours in the pool every morning and then either two hours of weights or one hour of Pilates. Before I had Arlen I would work out six hours total every day. When I went back to training for the Olympics I couldn’t exactly cut that time in half, but realized that you do a lot running around as a mom so that makes up for it.
Who has been your biggest supporter? Who has been your biggest inspiration?
Definitely my mom. She’s been an amazing example of the mom I would like to be and I always call her for tips – like how to baby proof every room and different fun activities for my son. She has definitely been a pillar of strength here at the Olympics and throughout my entire swimming career, so I’m thrilled to be part of the P&G Thank You, Mom campaign that honors all of the sacrifice and support she’s given me, which has inspired me to do the same with my son Arlen.
If you could say anything to the younger version of you – just starting to get into the pool – what would you say?
It never goes perfectly. It’s a roller coaster of a career and I always say what defines an Olympic athlete is what you do during the lows not during the highs.
What does it mean to you be partnered with Pampers?
I couldn’t ask for a better partner than Pampers. For me, it represents everything about my comeback – It isn’t solely about being an Olympic athlete, it’s all about families and who I am as a mom. It’s about doing both. Pampers diapers provide overnight protection that helps Arlen have a sound night sleep, so he – and I – can continue to achieve our dreams.
