Every year, between Thanksgiving and Christmas, The Salvation Army collects donations in front of stores and on street corners nationwide in their signature Red Kettles. The money collected not only provides meals and shelter for families and Christmas toys for millions of children during the holiday season, but also supplies necessary resources for numerous other social services programs year-round such as substance abuse programs, domestic violence respite and counseling services, and military veteran assistance programs.
This season for the second year, The Salvation Army is launching the #RedKettleReason campaign to encourage people everywhere to share their reasons for supporting The Salvation Army and giving back to the red kettles during the holidays. I love this campaign because I think it really hits on what Christmas, and really what our lives, should be all about. Being thankful for what we have, recognizing others who may have less, and trying to be the best we all can be while doing our darnedest to help other people along the way. The Salvation Army does so much good for so many people (27 million people in the U.S. last year, in fact); it’s important to really take the time to reflect on what they do and how we can be part of “Doing The Most Good” too by supporting those red kettles.

This year, The Salvation Army is launching The Salvation Army Giving Spree, a video contest encouraging Americans to share their #RedKettleReason for a chance to win a televised, all-expenses-paid shopping spree in the Big Apple. All the toys and necessities the winner grabs go directly to a Salvation Army children’s shelter or children’s program in their community! Then, the winner gets to fly all of those gifts back to their hometown to help distribute them. Record a video of yourself explaining why you support The Salvation Army and give back during the holidays, and why your community deserves to win. If you have a personal story about The Salvation Army, such as volunteering there, having been helped, or knowing someone who was helped by their social services and programs, be sure to talk about that! Then upload your video to Twitter, YouTube, Instagram, or Vimeo, and tweet a link to it on Twitter using the hashtags #RedKettleReason and #GivingSpreeSweeps. The finalists will be announced on December 1, 2015 (Giving Tuesday) and their videos will be featured on redkettlereason.org for voting.
