And it was no different when I had my other children either. With each child, it was instantaneous. But before we met, there was a lot of preparation that took place and I know that all moms understand what I mean when I say that.
I’m a reader – a researcher – a knowledge sponge if you will. I like to know TOO MUCH before diving into something new. It’s my thing. There’s something very comforting in that process for me. The DAY I found out I was pregnant with Natalie in 2004, I ran right to Barnes and Nobles and bought every book they had that focused on the first trimester. Three highlighters later, I was ready to roll.
I knew how to soothe, what toys to keep around for the first three months, what sleepers work best… you name it and I had a list!
But reading wasn’t enough… I liked interviews as well. All the women in my family started to receive weekly phone calls and emails. My goodness, I should become a research analyst, right? LOL! But in all seriousness, isn’t that what your tribe is there for – to support you / guide you / comfort you?
In order to give my children the best possible start ever, I had to learn all about the hits and misses that my friends and families had during their first year. Why reinvent the wheel, right? The more I spoke to my circle, the more equipped I felt as a new parent.
Fast forward almost a decade and here I am welcoming my third child – Caleb. By 2013, there was no more need for books or phone calls of course. I’ve lived through two child births and was pretty knowledgable first-hand about what to expect. By my third child, I had all the science down pact and I knew that in order to give this baby the best possible start, the only thing I needed to focus on was love.
Everything else was already in place. I knew what car seats to install, what pack n play I liked, and what diapers didn’t leak. What an easy ride for us both! With him, I just had to put all my energy towards love – security – warmth – and guidance. Caleb was so blessed because not only did he receive these things from me and my husband, but he also received them from his two older siblings – Natalie and Liam – as well.
We are complete as a family now. 5 is the official number and I’ve never been happier.
