Loading and Using Bluebird from American Express and Walmart Is A Cinch!

The Bluebird card arrived just like any other American Express credit card would. You can also pick up a starter card at your local Walmart. Once you call and activate it, you can then go online to Bluebird.com to add/load funds to the card. By the way, I love that you have the option to log in using not only your user name and password, but also a security code question like “first company you worked at.” When it comes to online banking, the more security the better for me.

You can load the card a number of ways, from linking your bank account to direct deposit to linking Bluebird to your debit card. You also have the option to download the iPhone and Android app for your smartphone where you can do it all..including deposting checks just by taking a picture of the front and back of the check!!  You can even move funds from your Bluebird card to your bank account. How easy is that??

I actually wanted to if it is easy to load the card with cash, so I headed to the closest Walmart store. Simply wait on the customer service line and easy as pie…hand the card and the cash to the cashier. It took all of 2 minutes to load the money on the card…and I instantly received a confirmation email as well as was able to see the deposit on the card on Bluebird.com. I love how fast that was…and how quickly it all linked together. Efficient and effective use of technology is a big plus for me. The seem to really have their act together.

Since I was already at Walmart, I figured I might as well do some shopping. Wouldn’t you?? Let’s just make sure those easily loaded funds were there as quickly as it seemed they were…and they were! The card works just like any other credit or debit card. I was able to pick up some Christmas stocking stuffer toys and cool socks for the kids, as well as some milk, string cheese, cookies, and pretzels…all at Walmart’s famously low prices! To top it off, you get the benefits of being an American Express cardmember…which I know first hand means TOP notch customer service, ease of use, American Express Purchase Protection, and even Roadside Assistance.

Remember: Unlike other cards on the market, cash withdrawals at non-network ATMs is only $2 and there is no charge for calling customer service, unlike other Prepaid Cards on the market. Here is a full list of the fees that are waived when you get this card:

  • No Activation Fees
  • No Monthly Maintainance Fees
  • No Inactivity Fees
  • No Annual Fees
  • No Foreign Exchange Fees
  • No Replacement Fees

I think the next Bluebird post will center on the really cool subaccount feature as well as the iPhone app I downloaded.  So far, I’m really loving the Bluebird by American Express.
